When I started my first company
I'm sure I was way behind where you are right now.
I knew almost nothing about business when
I started my cottage industry selling knitted hats and sweaters. I
loved my designs and loved creating them, but when it came to all

company. I had been in the corporate world, then had my children
and decided that I would stay home and finally do something that got
my creative juices flowing and was profitable. My idea was to take my
design expertise and interest, turn them into a business and
pay for my kids to attend private school. And I came up with several
different product ideas before I decided on what was going to be my
niche.
What is likely different
than you is that not quite 3 years into my business venture, my
husband John died from a malignant brain tumor. The 3 years
we had together as a family after the diagnosis was, as I reflect on
it now, a life changing experience and one that has impacted my life
more than I would ever know. It was an an anxious and
stressful time and my little business helped to keep my sanity. I
remember how we laughed about how we had learned to live with our
"feet planted firmly in mid-air."

I mistakenly thought all I needed was a
great design and the sales would pile up.
NO WAY!
It didn't happen
that way and I was totally wrong!
As
you'll read in "How I Got Started" I
packed up the kids, flew to New York from my Seattle area home and hired a sales rep. I
was fortunate to have been given a recommendation that worked out
very well for me. And getting to New York greatly enlightened my
industry perspective and I thought I had it made - I had a great
product and Nordstrom had already bought from me - so I just knew I
was heading to the top.
But Not Yet!
I kept asking people
questions. Most of my friends had never owned their own small business; my
family thought it would cost me too much money and not make enough
(why didn't I just get a "real job" if I wanted to make
money); and worst of all people in
the industry were not very helpful. I guess it was the fear
factor or maybe they didn't know either. I got more misinformation from other company owners I met at trade shows than any where
else. I couldn't believe how they got me off course.
At my first New York trade show I
remember trying to enlist help from others in my industry who shared
the same sales rep. I thought they would be happy to help me because
I was not a threat to them since I had a totally different product
line. They were tight lipped, secretive,
sometimes rude and generally not a great source of inspiration. I found it
close to impossible to
pry any helpful information out of anyone.
I was searching for answers,
and even searching for the right questions to ask. I didn't know
where to go - who to ask - or what I needed to know. But I was
determined to find the key to how I could build my businesses. I
looked at competitive businesses; checked out their booths at trade shows; got
their literature.
I was persistent and
also observant
I learned almost everything the
hard way. And sometimes the very hard way. Hit or miss, and then it
became a game. How clever could I be? Fortunately I love to read
mysteries, so figuring this all out was like solving a murder mystery (OK not
quite the same, but you get the idea).
And in business books - forget it. I
read everything! All the "craft books" "start your own business
books" "get rich quick with your own product books" "marketing
books" - and nothing really helped me. These well meaning authors
did not know my industry and didn't understand my products and the
direction I wanted to take my company. Many books said I could apply
all their principals to ANY business - but honestly that simply was
not so.
I wanted to
market and sell to stores - not set up a booth
at craft fairs and
I wanted to make REAL money and create a solid
marketing model!
I studied some
of the bigger businesses; looked at their booths at trade shows;
watched them decorate their booths, and sell to their customers; and
I even bought their products. But that wasn't
the complete answer I was searching for because these companies, though successful, had marketing dollars way beyond my humble budget.
I needed a way to get buyers to look at my products and then buy my
products without going broke in the process.

My line was really darling, well priced and
good quality - but I was getting really frustrated with sales not
being at the level that I wanted. I made many mistakes that cost
me a lot of money and most of all they cost me TIME. I was in a
highly seasonal clothing market and if I didn't have high sales for one of
those seasons, I had to wait till the next year! That was way too
long, I needed to make money each and every season. I simply
couldn't afford to wait.
What I didn't fully realize when I
started my company was that if I couldn't market I didn't have a
business. I could
design all I wanted - but I have to get someone to LOOK at my
products in order to SELL and I was definitely in businesses to make
a profit! I was not in it for a hobby. I needed to make money.
